Gems Africa 2021

Gems Africa 2021 is the premier gems and jewellery event in Africa. The Fair will also include a 2-day conference to facilitate conversation about “mines to market” and “gems4peace”, a  Gala Dinner to honour pioneers and trailblazers in the mining sector in Africa, Gems Value Addition capacity building sessions and a post-conference mine tour.

Africa boasts of coveted coloured gemstones such as Ruby, Tsavorite, Yellow Tourmaline, Green Tourmaline, Red Garnet, Aquamarine, Amethyst, Iolite, Blue Sapphire, Diamonds, Gold, Tanzanite among others. Gems Africa 2021 will showcase Africa as a gemstone hub, provide market linkages for Africa’s mining and the global gem and jewellery industry as well as forge partnerships towards a sustainable mining sector in the continent.

The Fair and Conference will be hosted by the Association of Women in Extractives in Kenya (AWEIK) in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, State Department of Mining.

Over half of the world’s gemstones are mined in Africa. Gemstone value chains are particularly complex in Africa. The mining of these stones is predominantly through artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).

This year’s Conference will be dual-themed that is: “Mines to Market” and “Africa Gems for Peace”. The Conference will be interactive, providing working sessions and panel discussions. It will also provide an opportunity to agree on the way forward and get commitments of actions from stakeholders.

The Gems Africa 2021 Conference theme “Mines to Market” seeks to highlight some of the rare gems and coloured stones in Africa that could improve the economic and social dynamics of their source areas which tend to be remote. More importantly, it will position and promote women in the region, involved in the business of mining many of whom are at the grassroots level, to access regional and international markets.

The Gems Africa 2021 Conference theme “Africa Gems for Peace” seeks to play an important role in facilitating dialogue, advancing knowledge and information as well as informing regional and global stakeholders on the priority areas of intervention to enhance the role of women across gemstones and precious metals value chain and how they can support address mineral conflict facing the region.
