Gems Africa 2021 virtual conference: Responsible Sourcing of Gemstones and Gold from Mines To Market. The conference will include a 1-day conference to facilitate conversation around the themes: “Mines To Market” and “Africa Gems For Peace”.

Africa boasts of coveted coloured gemstones such as Ruby, Tsavorite, Yellow Tourmaline, Green Tourmaline, Red Garnet, Aquamarine, Amethyst, Iolite, Blue Sapphire, Diamonds, Gold, Tanzanite most of which are mined by Artisanal Small Scale Miners in Africa. Gems Africa 2021 virtual conference will seek to bridge the gap between International Buyers and ASM Miners and help understand the complexities of risk management for ASM (gold and gemstones) as well as forge partnerships towards a sustainable mining sector in the continent.
The Conference will be hosted by the Association of Women in Extractives in Kenya (AWEIK) in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, State Department of Mining.
Over half of the world’s gemstones are mined in Africa. Gemstone and Gold value chains are particularly complex in Africa. The mining of these stones is predominantly through artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).
This year’s virtual Conference will focus on “Responsible sourcing of Gemstones and Gold from Mines To Market.” The Conference will be interactive, providing working sessions and panel discussions. It will also provide an opportunity to agree on the way forward and get commitments of actions from stakeholders.
